It’s Friday again!
This morning started with me waking up 30 minutes late, rushing the boys to daycare in pouring rain and thunder, then changing their clothes there since the boys had refused to cover up against the rain. I had to skip my morning coffee and didn’t bother with makeup.
Then I headed to the tram stop, missed my tram, and the mobile app for purchasing tickets didn’t work. At the office, a pile of work was waiting for me. But first, I had to change my own clothes, too, which were soaked. Luckily I was prepared: while packing spare clothes for the boys in the morning, as an afterthought, I chucked in a change of clothes for myself as well.
But now it’s early afternoon and the rain has stopped. I’ve finished the most urgent of my tasks, and the sun is shining. I even have some strawberries waiting for me and I’m able to take a little break.
Looks like the weekend is back on track!
So… talking about tracks, let’s get down to business. Friendly Friday is here! Continuing on the same track that co-host Amanda took last week with her Remote theme, this week I’d like to ask you:
What are your thoughts on tourism and overtourism?
The theme for Friendly Friday this week is Tourism.
Would there be so many boats if it wasn’t for the tourists? Cinque Terre, Italy, July 2016
I invite you all to join the fun! Here’s how:
- Link your response to the comments section of this post
- Include a pingback in your post
- Add our logo, if you want to
- Have a look at other participants’ posts to see how they’ve interpreted the same theme. After all, interaction is what it’s all about!
- There’s no deadline for participating, it doesn’t have to be on Friday! But the earlier you link up, the more views you’ll get
The Friendly Friday Photo Challenge is a weekly blogging event, hosted by myself and Amanda over at Something to Ponder About. Next week, it’ll be Amanda’s turn again.
Talk to you soon!
Great topic for this week, Snow! I will be very interested to see the different interpretations! It sounds like you went through a tropical thunderstorm! I didn’t think you would get that in Finland!

Likewise. Enjoy those delicious strawberries! I remember the taste of Scandinavian berries! Hmm…….We are in Strawberry season here too, but unfortunately they just don’t grow with zest in our heat. They kind of taste bland.

Ah, but you guys have mangos, papaya, passion fruit… 😋 yum! (My 250g box of strawberries cost 6 euro!)

Ouch! That is expensive. Yes we do have the tropical fruit – plus plenty of pineapples!

I love pineapples! They are actually not that expensive over here, less expensive than strawberries, anyway 😁 we sometimes buy them!

It´s raining here as well, but not as bad I think. The forecast promise sun and 24 C tomorrow and even warmer through next week. Have a nice weekend!

The rain started again and it doesn’t seem to be stopping. But so many people have been complaining it hadn’t rained so I guess they are happy! 😆 Have a sunny weekend, Maria, and thanks for your entry!

What a day! So sorry. I try to stay away from places where there are a large number of tourists although it’s getting harder and harder.

Fascinating subject and can’t wait to have some time and go through all the contributions.
Here is my (slightly cheating) post, since I’ve posted all these photos this year already for various Friendly Fridays but I’ve decided on a compilation because I’m running out of space (again). I suppose blog #5 is in order.

Tourism is a great topic, right up my alley! I’m linking it to my Sunday Stills post tomorrow as I celebrate the US National Park Service 103rd anniversary! Sounds like you need some tourist time away for yourself, Snow!

I love that boats photo. It looks so much like a harbor in Italy that a sailboat I was on pulled into. We were taking on water and the skipper’s fiance just blew a gasket and started yelling about something, I forget what. I retreated to the jetty where the waterman beamed at me and professed his admiration for the strong-willed Englishwoman. Golden days. My offering, as you know, is: https://grahamsisland.com/2019/08/24/the-cruise-ship-is-in/.

Tourism is a blessing and a curse.. Brings in much needed money but most certainly spoils the old quaintness as always followed by a building boom.. 😉

Yes, I agree! And the quaint souvenirs you were able to find pleasure in discovering suddenly become unintentionally kitsch in a tasteless way, produced in massive volumes, losing their original point… culture becomes mass produced

I think overtourism is something a lot of places are beginning to have to consider. The lands can only handle so many feet before they need to rest and regenerate. It seems to be a catch-22.

Maybe you could call your blog “The rain stops somewhere”? I must say the rain beats me more than the snow. Though to be honest I’ve never lived in a country with as much snow as yours. A bientôt Lumi.

Hahah, thanks for the idea 😂 If I ever do a 2nd blog, that will be its name!! 😆 For me, grey skies are depressing, even if there’s no rain or there is pretty white snow. It seems to be grey here most of the time. I just don’t have any energy if I can’t see blue sky and the sun. (Well, I’m part of the minority with my weather views. Many – if not most – of the locals prefer grey skies because the sun gives them migraines and is annoying when coming thru the window etc!! 🤯)

Haha! Why am I not surprised about the locals. Reason I left France in ’89 was precisely the grey skies. I couldn’t stand the lack of light six months a year. Depressing indeed.

Over-tourism is a topic that vexes me. I decry it, but then I want to see some of the same iconic spots as everyone else. I feel like I do my best to at least be a GOOD tourist, but at some point, we are all going to need to re-examine what we are doing to certain parts of our poor abused planet … I think I’m quite late getting to this post, so here’s to a good weekend coming up, albeit a week later!

Thanks Lexi! Better late than never! 😊 I sometimes get a “shopping hangover”, a big pang of remorse after spending hedonistically without thinking about tomorrow. The same goes for traveling. Sometimes I think, what’s the point? But yes, there are good sides to it too. Happy weekend!

“What was going on is that everybody became photographers thanks to the high-quality cameras we suddenly had on our phones and the fact that we were now expected to curate visually impeccable versions of our lives online.”
You might want to read this article which is very clever : https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/7/11/20686194/antelope-canyon-instagram-page-arizona-navajo

Wow, what an article!!! First of all, 6 million for that ugly BW shot, wtf?!?!?! Secondly, ”everyone use vivid warm” – that’s clever manipulation since everyone has to use a tour company and then everyone gets this advice (I see Kendall Jenner didn’t use it, must’ve had a photographer in her staff who had – real camera and then she posted them as hers…) And ”Tourists are already a kind of universal pest” – which is why I feel turned off by tourism at the moment.
